Overview
Environment Systems has built an enviable reputation for its data driven services. We leverage environmental knowledge and Earth observation skills, statistical analysis and mapping expertise to provide planners, policy makers and environment professionals with the evidence and insight they need.
Our staff range from ecologists and GIS analysts to statisticians and remote sensing experts, with a combined skill set that is unique in our sector.
We are driving research projects that place us at the leading edge of developments in a number of fields where we are pioneering new data workflows and algorithms to deliver an unrivalled understanding of the prevailing state of our environment.
Natural Capital
Ecosystem Services are the benefits that humans obtain from the processes and structures within ecosystems; they provide water, energy and timber, enable food production, sustain wildlife and provide employment and recreation. Environment Systems has developed new methods for modelling and mapping Ecosystem Services at regional and national scales. We now deliver this under our SENCE(Spatial Evidence for Natural Capital Evaluation) brand.
Habitat Mapping
We have been mapping habitats ever since we started, pioneering the use of satellite technology to map everything from grassland to woodland to coastal heath and limestone pavement.
Our experience stretches from geographical areas as diverse as the Georgia Rangelands to remote islands in the Caribbean and the South Atlantic.
We provide inventories and baselining as well as ongoing monitoring for the terrestrial, coastal and marine environment. We model and map habitats and track species using advanced remote sensing techniques with multiple data sources and ecologically driven rule bases.
Ecology
We offer a wide range of complementary services combining specialist ecological survey work with practical advice. Our work ranges from large public infrastructure projects such as wind farms and road schemes to housing projects and coastal surveys. Our team of ecologists is licensed to carry out protected species surveys for bats, great crested newts, water voles, otters etc. using the latest techniques and technology.
Our comprehensive understanding of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy has helped get numerous projects off the ground. As experienced wildlife consultants, we are used to dealing with the legal and commercial issues surrounding protected species. We guarantee a high quality service, with a strong focus on our clients who rely on us to manage their projects smoothly and produce the highest quality outputs to fulfil their requirements.
Monitoring
Monitoring is an important part of assessing the effectiveness of any land management intervention or policy objective. Without a robust, fit for purpose monitoring scheme it is not possible to judge whether the interventions, policies and/or programmes are fulfilling their objectives and delivering environmental protection. Environment Systems has helped design and implement a wide range of informative successful monitoring programmes. These include work under the Scottish Rural Development Programme, Welsh Government Schemes and more recently in England where Environment Systems was accepted on to Natural England’s Environmental Stewardship Monitoring and Evaluation framework.
We have used a range of statistical methods coupled with innovative technological solutions to deliver a high value cost effective evaluation of agri-environment schemes and suggested ways of monitoring the effectiveness of interventions and policies designed to enhance ecosystem goods and services. The ability to ascertain what is working well and what is not having the desired effect enables policy makers to adjust the interventions to ensure they meet the actual requirements.
The combination of tailored offerings using remote sensing, statistical analysis and field work makes it possible to find a cost effective way to monitor and ensure the best outcome for money invested.
